Key Air Force Research Priorities: Science and Technology at the Leading Edge

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

12:00 pm
Reitz Union Auditorium

Speaker

Dr. Werner J.A. Dahm
Chief Scientist
U.S. Air Force

The Air Force today depends more than ever on science and technology to provide the revolutionary capabilities that it needs to perform its missions in the air, space, and cyber domains. Its current annual research and development budget is over $24 billion, and its acquisition budget is nearly $34 billion. These budgets are directed at technical priorities broadly aligned to meet strategic objectives. Research at universities and small companies plays an important role in building the technical foundations on which future capabilities will be based. Dr. Dahm will discuss a number of critical technical challenges facing the Air Force over the next two decades, ranging from hypersonic weapons and operationally responsive space access to energy security and unmanned vehicles.
