An Introduction to the Webmail Client
by Shawn C Lander on November 26, 2003
printer friendly version

The College of Engineering webmail system uses SquirrelMail as its client software. Several plugins have been added to aid in your use of the system. Additionally, several customizations have been made to the look of the webmail client to give it a more professional and more Gator-oriented feel. However, the plugins and customizations do not change the way the webmail client behaves.

Much, if not all, of the default documentation for using SquirrelMail is still valid for this installation. As a result, this will not be a complete guide to how to use the webmail client. For that information please read the SquirrelMail Users Guide and the UserFAQ. Instead, this will be some information you need to know about using the webmail client and some simple tips that you can take advantage of.

Logging In
Logging into the College of Engineering webmail client is really rather simple... if you know your current email password. If you don't know your email password you'll have to get it reset by MIS (call 2-9217).

Once you know your email password (either because you knew it or because it was reset by MIS), open a web browser and surf to: http://webmail.eng.ufl.edu.

It is important to note that if your email password had to be reset, you will be asked for your email password the next time you open your default email client (Eudora / Outlook). The webmail password and Eudora / Outlook password is one-in-the-same.

Using Webmail
Once you properly login to the webmail client you will be presented with the email messages that are currently in your INBOX.

For most users the INBOX is the only mailbox that you'll need to access. However, for users that access their email via IMAP, you will be able to access all your stored mailboxes and messages (in order to do so you need to subscribe to your mailboxes in the Folders window).

A word of warning, the more mailboxes you attempt to use through the webmail system the slower the client will appear.

It is important to understand that the webmail client interacts with the same mailboxes as your workstation email client (Eudora / Outlook / etc). As a result, changes made by one client affect operations within the other. For instance, if, using the webmail client, you check your email and delete several messages when you check your email with Eudora the next time, the messages you deleted will not be downloaded and available within Eudora.

Setting Options
You'll want to customize the behavior of the webmail client to suit your needs. This is simply done by using the Options menu item at the top of the webmail client browser window. From here you will be able to change Display Preferences, Folder Preferences, and NewMail Options.

These options will enable you to add a realtime clock to the folder list, move the folder list from the left to right side of the screen, increase/decrease the number of email messages displayed on a single page, or change a variety of other settings.
