Viruses can be damaging and may spread very quickly. Most viruses require you to open the attachment that comes along with it, so DO NOT OPEN any unfamiliar attachments, especially ones that come from unknow or untrusted sources. Even if an attachment appears to come from an official business, such as Microsoft, it is best to question the attachment and try to investigate why you would be getting it. If you have already opened a unfamiliar attachment please alert your computer support office, if MIS serves you directly please contact us at 392-9217.

Virus Hoaxes
MIS receives messages all the time warning that this new evil virus will erase your hard drive simply by reading an email message. The messages usually invoke the name of some major company to stake a claim towards legitimacy and conclude by urging you to forward the warning to everyone you know. Most of these messages are hoaxes which prey on your fear of legitimate viruses, such as Happy99 and Melissa. Below is a list of resources to help you understand Virus Hoaxes and Ubran Legends. (Use these lists to verify warnings that you receive.)
