Biomedical engineer wows crowd with three minute thesis

Biomedical Engineering doctoral student Badal Juneja won the People’s Choice Award after presenting his research on “backscatter imaging for medical applications” in the final round of the Three Minute Thesis Competition.

The competition – which challenges its contestants to condense years of work into an “elevator pitch” – was started in Australia in 2008 and has traveled to 170 universities in 17 countries, including 37 schools in the U.S.

Backscatter imaging systems are designed with the x-ray source and detector next to one another, which allows machines to be smaller and less obtrusive. The University of Florida was an early pioneer of this technology.
