Ophthalmic innovator and philanthropic leader Dr. Herbert A. Wertheim was honored as a University of Florida Distinguished Alumnus in 2009. He studied electrical engineering at UF prior to becoming a doctor of optometry. He is credited with being the first to publicize the prevention of cataracts and retinal damage to eye care professionals, and for discovering innovative solutions that have kept millions of people from going blind. This fall, The Bent, the official publication of engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi, published an article profiling Wertheim in its ongoing leadership series.
