Abstract
Transportation systems are essential for daily human activities. In 2014, traffic congestion resulted in nearly $160 billion in congestion cost and caused Americans in urban areas to purchase an extra 3.1 billion gallons of fuel and accounted for nearly $160 billion in congestion cost. Traffic signals in specific contributed to up to 10 percent of all traffic delay that aggregated to nearly 295 million vehicle-hours of delay on major roadways only. By some estimates, the percentage of the population that spends at least one hour on the road each day is as high as 40%. The use of dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) and connected vehicle technology has the potential to alleviate this congestion as well as improve the overall safety.
