UF Cybersecurity Expert and FICS Develop New Skimmer Detection
UF researchers, including Patrick Traynor, co-director of the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity (FICS) Research and John and Mary Lou Dasburg Preeminent Chair in Engineering, have teamed up with the NYPD to deploy the “Skim Reaper,” a device that instantly detects the presence of a credit card skimmer, allowing law enforcement and merchants to take action before the card’s data can be stolen.

Wertheim Honored with Doctorate of Technology; Moreno Named a UF Distinguished Alumnus
At the 2018 commencement ceremonies, Dr. Herbert Wertheim (HDT '18) received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology Degree from the University of Florida, joining the 2018 commencement class as one of UF’s New Engineers. Alejandro “Alex” Moreno (BS ChE '83) also received the UF Distinguished Alumnus Award.

UF President Dr. Kent Fuchs recognizes Kevin Jones (center) as the 2017-2018 UF Teacher-Scholar of the Year, and William Jones stands by his son’s side 28 years after he received the same honor.
A Family Legacy of Teaching Excellence
Kevin Jones, Frederick N. Rhines Professor of Materials Science and Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has been named The University of Florida’s 2017-2018 Teacher-Scholar of the Year. This is the oldest and highest award given by the University of Florida. Jones is the son of William Jones, professor emeritus of the Department of Chemistry. William Jones was the UF Teacher-Scholar of the Year in 1989-1990.

UF Engineering Student Pitches Sustainable Solutions at United Nations Conference
Jenny Olmsted, a 22-year-old environmental engineering senior, presented her proposal at the Students Seeking Solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) conference. Olmsted pitched her design and implementation ideas for a fully purifying, all-inclusive 3-D printed water filter.
