In 2021, NSF recognized three promising young researchers from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering by presenting them with NSF Early CAREER awards. How a Robot Developed at UF Could Help First Responders See Through Walls During Rescues
A University of Florida research team led by Eric Jing Du, Ph.D., a professor of civil and coastal engineering, is working on a robot dog that has the ability to enter an enclosed space, scan it, and provide humans with a visual of what’s inside, an application that could lessen dangerous situations for first responders.

UF Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe Make History: Only Civil Program To Win National Championships Twice
The University of Florida’s Eckhoff Steel Bridge team and Concrete Canoe design team have won their respective national competitions. This is the second time in UF’s history that this has happened, the first time was in 2015. No other civil program has accomplished this feat.

MSE Alumnus Wins Wilmer Souder Award in Dentistry
Department of Materials Science & Engineering alumnus Alvaro Della Bona, D.D.S, Ph.D., FADM (Ph.D. MSE ’01), has been awarded the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Wilmer Souder Award in Dental Materials. Dr. Della Bona is a dentist, researcher and senior professor at the University of Passo Fundo in Brazil. He is also the first person from Latin America to win the prestigious award.

GATR Vex team
GATR Vex Ranked Third in VEX Robotics World Championship
GATR Vex, the University of Florida VexU robotics team, was a semi-finalist in the 2021 University VEX Robotics World Championship. The team was ranked third out of more than 300 teams competing. GATR Vex also won the Build Award, which is presented to a team that has built a competition robot that clearly demonstrates overall quality and a durable design. Other awards they won this year included the Florida State Amaze Award and Texas Regional Champions.

UF Researchers Developing AI Technology to Measure Produce Freshness
Alina Zare, Ph.D., a professor in ECE, and Tie Liu, Ph.D., an assistant professor in IFAS, were featured on TV20 News for their work using AI and x-ray technology to detect freshness signatures being emitted from your fruits and vegetables. Eventually, their goal is to create an app or wearable device that can read how fresh produce is, and how long you have to use it.
