Last summer, 15 UF engineering students spent six weeks in Berlin tackling pressing world problems. The students set out to develop an easier pill bottle, mitigate coastal pollution, plan a micro-green grocer with sustainable products, straighten the posture of computer users and employ crowdsourcing to increase EV chargers in rural areas.

A new, easy-to-use HIV-detection test kit being developed at the University of Florida using advanced CRISPR technology shows promise as an early-warning alarm system that could save millions of lives. Piyush Jain, Ph.D., an assistant professor at UF’s Department of Chemical Engineering, and his team are working toward finalizing their HIV infection-detection method. With results in minutes, the test will help patients receive treatment sooner and potentially lower the amount of virus in their bodies to undetectable levels.

Jacob Chung, Ph.D., stands as the epitome of the American Dream. In 1971, at age 23, he moved to the United States from Taiwan with one suitcase and $1,000. He had earned his bachelor’s degree from National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan and planned to become an aerospace engineer in America. Now an esteemed professor with the UF’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Chung was awarded the Exceptional Public Service Medal from NASA in late June. The award is among the highest honors bestowed by the NASA Glenn Research Center Awards Office.

UF Health's R. James Toussaint and UF engineering professor Swarup Bhunia, Ph.D., have invented a new wearable Bluetooth device they hope will revolutionize patient safety in orthopaedics, allowing doctors and patients to receive real-time alerts from an unobtrusive electronic sensor pasted on a limb or worn in a shoe.
