University of Florida to lead hub for $285 million semiconductor research institute

The University of Florida will lead one of seven regional hubs of a new, $285 million nationwide institute dedicated to advancing America’s semiconductor industry through next-generation simulations known as digital twins. Volker Sorger, Ph.D., the Walden and Paula Rhines Endowed Professor of Semiconductor Photonics in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UF, will direct the Florida/Caribbean hub of the SMART USA Institute.

Congratulations to Kati Migliaccio, the new dean of CALS

The University of Florida has selected Kati Migliaccio, Ph.D., UF/IFAS Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering chair, as the new College of Agricultural and Life Sciences dean. She will assume her new role Jan. 1.

United Nations ratifies UF-created framework to protect people on cash apps

UF cybersecurity professor Kevin Butler, Ph.D., developed the framework, which spells out guidance for countries to prevent fraud and abuse on mobile cash apps. Cash apps are the prominent form of banking in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia and can leave people vulnerable to losing their life savings.

Agricultural and Biological Engineering’s Eban Bean, Ph.D., works with a team of engineers, researchers and environmental experts to minimize the effects of stormwater runoff through Green Stormwater Infrastructure protocols.

From sustainability to showjumping

During its 30th annual awards ceremony, the International Center at the University of Florida last week honored 15 international students – from Italy to the Ivory Coast – for building cultural bridges across campus. Two winners of the International Student Achievement Awards are from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering: Ph.D. student Karthik Boregowda from India and Industrial and Systems Engineering senior Yousef Bani Ahmad from Jordan.

First Gen Gator reflects on ‘bittersweet’ journey to success

Thanks to the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarship (MFOS), Claudia Klejc is now finishing her senior year as a biomedical major in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, focusing on biomechanics and looking toward a future in developing cutting-edge medical devices.

UF Tau Beta Pi Honor Society honors Eminent Engineers

At its Fall 2024 initiation ceremony and banquet, Tau Beta Pi Florida Alpha initiated more than 65 new student members but also honored engineering professors—and now Eminent Engineers—Jian Li, Ph.D., Robert Ferl, Ph.D., Pamela Dickrell, Ph.D., and Juan Gilbert, Ph.D., (not pictured).

Gator Engineering faculty take home inventions of year from UF Innovate

In November, UF Innovate | Tech Licensing announced the top six innovations of 2024 at its annual Standing InnOvation event, three of which were developed by faculty researchers in the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.  
Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida Rising Stars
Two HWCOE faculty members have been named Rising Stars by the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida. Alison Dunn, Ph.D., from the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Roozbeh Tabrizian, Ph.D from Electrical and Computer Engineering were recognized for their contributions to their respective fields of study and for their potential to become future inductees of the organization. Both Dunn and Roozbeh were recognized at the Rising Stars awards ceremony, hosted during the ASEMFL annual meeting, earlier this month.

Gator Engineering saddened by loss of leader
UF Provost, Joe Glover and former College Dean and William H. Wadsworth Director of the Engineering Leadership Institute, Professor of Materials Science & Engineering, Cammy Abernathy, stand with Olga and Carlos del Sol at a college event.
Carlos del Sol (BS ’72), Gator engineer and valued Dean’s Advisory Board member, died peacefully in late November. Del Sol, 74, retired from the Campbell Soup Co. as the vice president for global engineering. Within the Gator engineering community, del Sol and his wife, Olga, supported student scholarships, the STEP-UP program, the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (where he earned his degree) and the Herbert Wertheim Laboratory for Engineering Excellence, the college’s new flagship building.

Del Sol also served as a member of the University of Florida College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board and a past chair of the Industrial Engineering Advisory Board. He was a member of the UF Alumni Association Board of Directors, was recognized as a UF Distinguished Alumnus and won the UF Industrial Engineering Alumni Leadership Award.

Beyond his professional achievements, del Sol will be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness and unwavering support for the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering’s mission.
CENTERS AND INSTITUTE NEWS

Ph.D. students help future data and environmental scientists build new skills

Now a Ph.D. student in the University of Florida’s Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, Alexis Jackson volunteers to connect young students with science fields they might not otherwise encounter. In August, she teamed up with environmental engineering graduate student Nick Chin to lead a class for high school students, helping them analyze data sets to explore how chemicals can impact human health and the environment.
