UF cybersecurity professor Kevin Butler, Ph.D., developed the framework, which spells out guidance for countries to prevent fraud and abuse on mobile cash apps. Cash apps are the prominent form of banking in Africa, South America and Southeast Asia and can leave people vulnerable to losing their life savings.

Carlos del Sol (BS ’72), Gator engineer and valued Dean’s Advisory Board member, died peacefully in late November. Del Sol, 74, retired from the Campbell Soup Co. as the vice president for global engineering. Within the Gator engineering community, del Sol and his wife, Olga, supported student scholarships, the STEP-UP program, the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering (where he earned his degree) and the Herbert Wertheim Laboratory for Engineering Excellence, the college’s new flagship building.

Del Sol also served as a member of the University of Florida College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board and a past chair of the Industrial Engineering Advisory Board. He was a member of the UF Alumni Association Board of Directors, was recognized as a UF Distinguished Alumnus and won the UF Industrial Engineering Alumni Leadership Award.

Beyond his professional achievements, del Sol will be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness and unwavering support for the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering’s mission.
