Biography

Dr. Edward Latorre-Navarro is the Director of the Integrated Product and Process Design (IPPD) program within the Department of Engineering Education here at the University of Florida. He joins UF from his previous role as Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo (UPRA). At UPRA, he served as the Department Chair and the Academic Assessment Coordinator, where he led the department towards its first ABET accreditation.

Driven by his passion for mentoring and maximizing the potential of his students, he led a mobile development research laboratory with the mission of providing technological solutions for UPRA and the STEM academic community, through improving the effectiveness of the academic teaching experience based on student engagement with educational goals. His teaching philosophy employs many ideas from the concepts of flipped classrooms, project-based courses, effort-based grading and minimizing traditional exams. Edward has also taught graduate computer science courses and is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Puerto Rico.

During his doctoral studies, Edward was a member of the Computational NeuroEngineering Lab Hybrid Group under Dr. John G. Harris, where he worked on speech and natural language processing.  Dr. Latorre-Navarro holds PhD and MS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida, and Bachelor of Science and MS degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez.
