Engineering Deans’ Cup recognizes students’ teamwork and competitive spirit.
Experiential learning and teamwork are essential ingredients to a rewarding engineering education for many engineering students. Student competitions give undergraduates not only the chance to put their classroom knowledge to work in a real world setting, but also, to bond with teammates over shared wins and losses.
In recognition of the hard work and competitive spirit exhibited by undergraduate engineering students across the nation, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, in partnership with other engineering colleges helped establish the Engineering Deans’ Cup in 2018. Many of the competitions are organized by national engineering societies such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), the American Society of Civil Engineers, etc. Foundations, associations and industries sponsor other competitions that are featured in the overall championship. The scoring is tabulated based on placement in each competition. The cup is awarded each year to the university achieving the greatest success in 30 annual, team-based engineering student competitions.
The inaugural champion was Virginia Tech. This year, the University of Florida came out on top as the overall champion, with The Georgia Institute of Technology coming in a close second, followed by California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.
Students can benefit from these types of professional skills and team-based competitions in many ways. The competition process allows students to challenge themselves and gain new technical skills and problem-solving insights. Entering a competition also helps hone a student’s ability to work as part of a team. Competitions also offer students the opportunity to test their own ideas in a relatively low-risk environment and learn the value of peer feedback. Looking forward to career choices, competitions help students build their resumes in ways that distinguish them from the crowd, polish up their networking skills, and even introduce them to top employers in industry.
