Michele Manuel will be honored for her contributions in thermodynamics-based alloy design.
ASM International, a professional organization for materials scientists and engineers, has announced that its Board of Trustees has elected Michele Manuel to become a Fellow of its society, citing her “outstanding leadership and technical contributions in thermodynamics-based alloy design and its associated methods as applied to light metals.” The honor will be conferred at the ASM awards dinner in Pittsburgh later this year.
Manuel was the recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and was recently named the chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida.
“Michele is an internationally recognized leader in light metals,” said Cammy Abernathy, dean of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and a professor of materials science and engineering. “Her leadership is evident both in her field and here at the college. I congratulate her for this honor of being elected an ASM Fellow.”
Manuel has developed advanced dissolving metal surgical implants, lightweight metals for transportation, and high strength shape changing alloys. The department she leads, is ranked 7th in the country by U.S. News & World Report, among materials engineering schools at public universities.
