Professor Chelsea Simmons
Dept. of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering
University of Florida

ABSTRACT: In many diseases, mechanical changes occur alongside functional changes in tissue. Most therapies seek to restore function without considering the cause and lasting effects of the accompanying mechanical changes. The Simmons Lab designs, fabricates, and applies custom systems to separate mechanical and biochemical factors influencing cells and deploys innovative characterization tools to quantify properties of engineered “microtissues”. Applications in cancer-stroma interactions in pancreatic tumors and scar-free regeneration of dermal wounds will be discussed. Opportunities for faculty involvement in HWCOE-wide outreach program run by Dr. Simmons will also be presented.
