Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering Seminar Series

Speaker: Matt Frank (Iowa State University)

Abstract: This talk will focus on the topic of Hybrid Manufacturing and how we can innovate solutions that combine the best of multiple manufacturing and material choices. The reality is that most every product today is made use a hybrid approach; we not only cut, but bend, form, add, subtract, treat, color and otherwise add value over a series of steps and methods. The particular focus of this talk will be on how we combine additive and subtractive manufacturing methods, and how we combine decidedly different materials in an integrated process.

Bio: Dr. Matt Frank is the C.G. Turk and Joyce A. Therkildsen Department Chair for the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering at Iowa State University. His research has focused on creating new methods for rapid manufacturing that can create functional parts at nearly the push of a button. A particular focus of Dr. Frank’s research is on Hybrid Manufacturing, which is the combination of Additive Manufacturing (e.g. 3D printing) and Subtractive Manufacturing (e.g. CNC machining). His work has been applied to the manufacturing of industrial components, rapid pattern tooling, custom bone implants, and Design for Manufacturability (DfM) software solutions.
