Research Opportunities in NSF CMMI

NSF Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation
Dr. Steven R. Schmid will present the changes and research opportunities in the Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) division of the National Science Foundation, with particular emphasis on research in advanced manufacturing and the new Advanced Manufacturing Program. An overview of strategies and practices for effective proposal preparation will be discussed, as well as an outline of new opportunities, including the LEAP HI program, elimination of submission windows, and relaxation of budgetary restrictions.
Steven R. Schmid received his BSME at the Illinois Institute of Technology; MS and Ph.D. degrees at Northwestern University; and is a Professor at the University of Notre Dame. He conducts research and teaches courses in the general fields of manufacturing, metal forming, and design. Of his textbooks, Manufacturing Engineering and Technology is the world’s most popular manufacturing textbook. Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials, Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication, and Fundamentals of Machine Elements are two of his other books. In 2012-2013, Dr. Schmid was the first Faculty Fellow at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, and helped design the Manufacturing USA program. His is currently a Program Director in Advanced Manufacturing at the National Science Foundation. He has won numerous best paper, research, and teaching awards, and served as President of the North American Manufacturing Research Institute from 2015-2016.
