Urban Intelligence: towards integrated, resilient, and equitable cities

This talk focuses on data science-enabled scientific discoveries and artificial intelligence techniques to improve sustainability and resilience of urban systems. Cities around the world are facing various physical, social, and economic challenges under the impacts of many stressors such as climate disasters, which are in large part due to a network of connectivity and non-linear dynamics in the nexus of human, infrastructure, and natural systems. The big data revolution opens the door to a variety of research in sensing, modeling, and optimizing civil infrastructure and the environment to capture connectivity and non-linearity. This presentation will describe efforts to create a Digital Twin of a city, with capabilities of harnessing heterogeneous urban-scale big data and artificial intelligence to better understand and predict complex interactions among human, infrastructure, and the environment, to offer data-driven, complexity-informed, equity-aware, and transdisciplinary insights to transform the way we design urban systems. This talk will also share ideas about how Dr. Fan’s future research built upon previous works could foster more integrated, resilient, and equitable cities.
