University of Florida cybersecurity experts Patrick Traynor and Kevin Butler expressed concerns over mobile banking applications in a recent Wall Street Journal article. Both professors – among the first hired last year as part of the university’s Preeminence initiative – work in the department of computer and information science and engineering. They were in Washington presenting a paper related to their concerns at the USENIX security conference.
The security flaws were found in six of seven popular mobile-money apps used primarily in developing countries, and threaten to leave some of the poorest populations – and those who depend almost entirely on mobile infrastructure – exposed to fraud and theft.
