{"id":19756,"date":"2016-07-08T16:39:12","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T20:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/?p=19756"},"modified":"2025-06-11T12:33:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T17:33:05","slug":"hook-line-and-sinker-researchers-find-new-way-to-stop-ransomware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/cise\/hook-line-and-sinker-researchers-find-new-way-to-stop-ransomware\/","title":{"rendered":"Hook, line and sinker: Researchers find new way to stop ransomware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Extortion extinction: Ransomware\" width=\"1640\" height=\"923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZFD_IHSUqok?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>GAINESVILLE, Fla. &#8212; Ransomware \u2013 what hackers use to encrypt your computer files and demand money in exchange for freeing those contents \u2013 is an exploding global problem with few solutions, but a team of University of Florida researchers says it has developed a way to stop it dead in its tracks.<\/p>\n<p>The answer, they say, lies not in keeping it out of a computer but rather in confronting it once it\u2019s there and, counterintuitively, actually letting it lock up a few files before clamping down on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur system is more of an early-warning system. It doesn\u2019t prevent the ransomware from starting &#8230; it prevents the ransomware from completing its task \u2026 so you lose only a couple of pictures or a couple of documents rather than everything that\u2019s on your hard drive, and it relieves you of the burden of having to pay the ransom,\u201d said Nolen Scaife, a UF doctoral student and founding member of the university&#8217;s Florida Institute for Cybersecurity (FICS) Research.<\/p>\n<p>Scaife is part of the team that has come up with the ransomware solution, which they call CryptoDrop.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware attacks have become one of the most urgent problems in the digital world. The FBI issued a warning in May saying the number of attacks has doubled in the past year and is expected to grow even more rapidly this year.<\/p>\n<p>It said it received more than 2,400 complaints last year and estimated losses from such attacks at $24 million last year for individuals and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Attackers are typically shadowy figures from other countries lurking on the Dark Web and difficult, if not impossible, to find. Victims include not only individuals but also governments, industry, healthcare providers, educational institutions and financial entities.<\/p>\n<p>Attacks most often show up in the form of an email that appears to be from someone familiar. The recipient clicks on a link in the email and unknowingly unleashes malware that encrypts his or her data. The next thing to appear is a message demanding the ransom, typically anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredibly easy way to monetize a bad use of software,\u201d said Patrick Traynor, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Computer &amp; Information Science &amp; Engineering and a member of FICS Research. He and Scaife worked together on developing CryptoDrop.<\/p>\n<p>Some companies have simply resigned themselves to that inevitability and budgeted money to cover ransoms, which usually must be paid in Bitcoin, a digital currency that defies tracing.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware attacks are effective because, quite simply, they work.<\/p>\n<p>Antivirus software is successful at stopping them when it recognizes ransomware malware, but therein lies the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese attacks are tailored and unique every time they get installed on someone\u2019s system,\u201d Scaife said. \u201cAntivirus is really good at stopping things it\u2019s seen before \u2026 That\u2019s where our solution is better than traditional anti-viruses. If something that\u2019s benign starts to behave maliciously, then what we can do is take action against that based on what we see is happening to your data. So we can stop, for example, all of your pictures from being encrypted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scaife, Dr. Traynor, and colleagues Kevin Butler, Ph.D., at UF and Henry Carter at Villanova University lay out the solution in a paper accepted for publication at the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems and scheduled to be presented June 29 in Nara, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The results, they said, were impressive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ran our detector against several hundred ransomware samples that were live,\u201d Scaife said, \u201cand in those cases, it detected 100 percent of those malware samples and it did so after only a median of 10 files were encrypted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And CryptoDrop works seamlessly with antivirus software.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout one-tenth of 1 percent of the files were lost,\u201d Dr. Traynor said, \u201cbut the advantage is that it\u2019s flexible. We don\u2019t have to wait for that anti-virus update.
