{"id":22227,"date":"2017-09-22T13:10:17","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T18:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/?p=22227"},"modified":"2026-02-06T14:29:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T19:29:06","slug":"ufs-wind-engineering-experts-bring-lab-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/featured\/ufs-wind-engineering-experts-bring-lab-hurricane\/","title":{"rendered":"UF&#8217;s Wind Engineering Experts Bring the Lab to the Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Hurricane Irma, one of the strongest Atlantic storms in history, made its path toward Florida on September 10, 2017, the University of Florida\u2019s team of hurricane researchers headed south to meet the storm head on.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team, led by civil engineering professor and wind engineering expert <a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.eng.ufl.edu\/forrest-masters\/bio\/\">Forrest Masters<\/a>, deployed rugged weather stations to measure Irma\u2019s surface wind structure during landfall along Florida\u2019s southwest coast. Irma was the 30th named storm in which Masters has performed field experiments. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/blog\/science-public\/hurricanes-disasters-scientific-research\">His team\u2019s research<\/a> is critical to both improving building codes and standards, as well as understanding how severe weather winds affect coastal communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The field research is staged out of the UF Powell Family Structures and Materials Laboratory, which is among seven labs in the nation designated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/articles\/2015\/09\/new-federal-research-funding-makes-florida-universities-national-hub-for-hurricane-mitigation-research.php\">National Science Foundation<\/a> as an Experimental Facility (EF) under the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program and is also only one of two dedicated to studying extreme wind events. The Terraformer Wind Tunnel, a facility that draws researchers from all of the country, is part of the EF. The one-of-a-kind apparatus can dial up any type of terrain in 90 seconds to study the effects of strong winds on infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column column-has-background has-light-gray-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Strong are Irma\u2019s Winds? It\u2019s a Maserati vs. a Mazda.<\/h6>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/09\/prevatt-portrait-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"David Prevatt, Ph.D.\" class=\"wp-image-22237\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Over on the airwaves, <strong>David Prevatt,<\/strong> a structural engineering professor at UF, shared why Irma\u2019s winds were potentially catastrophic on NPR.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/09\/08\/549373747\/irmas-winds-and-floridas-infrastructure\">Listen to the interview<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine speeding down the highway at 70 miles an hour with your car window open. You stick your hand out and hold it in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Do you have a sense of how the wind is going to push your hand back?&#8221; asks David Prevatt, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Dr. David Prevatt- &#8220;<strong>Hurricane Irma&#8217;s top winds are exponentially stronger than anything most people have ever experienced<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now imagine getting out of his old Mazda and getting into a Maserati going 185 mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The force that I will feel on my hand in comparison to that 70 miles per hour is going to be almost seven times as strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is Prevatt&#8217;s way of saying Hurricane Irma&#8217;s top winds are exponentially stronger than anything most people have ever experienced.
