A civil engineering professor at the University of Florida\u2019s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, Elefteriadou focuses on traffic operations and simulation modeling for both traditional transportation as well as smart cities and self-driving cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research, supported by agencies including the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Science Foundation and the Florida Department of Transportation, is critical to paving the path for autonomous vehicles and smart transportation technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/governments-car-companies-must-resolve-their-competing-goals-for-self-driving-cars-84178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Conversation<\/a>, Elefteriadou explains why all players, including government entities and car companies, must resolve their competing goals for self-driving cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo consumer wants to buy a self-driving car that\u2019s programmed, even in the most remote of circumstances, to kill its driver instead of someone else (even if it would save a class of kindergarteners or a group of Nobel Prize winners),\u201d said Elefteriadou. \u201cAs federal regulations for self-driving cars advance in congressional votes and the U.S. Department of Transportation issues guidelines, an important part of real progress will be how everyone involved approaches those inherent conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leading the Nation in Transportation Research<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Transportation @ UFTI\" width=\"1640\" height=\"923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9CWVqsN8h-Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $14 million to Elefteriadou and the UFTI team for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transportation.institute.ufl.edu\/2016\/12\/usdot-awards-a-multimilion-dollar-regional-university-transportation-center-to-the-ufti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">traffic congestion research<\/a> last year. Known as STRIDE, or Southeastern Transportation Research, Innovation, Development and Education Center, the consortium is a national, multi-institutional initiative to develop novel strategies for optimizing road travel over the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nine university partners in the region consist of: Auburn University, The Citadel, Florida International University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Jackson State University, North Carolina State University, Tennessee Technological University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSTRIDE will address congestion through the use of new technologies available in vehicles, telecommunications capabilities, and shared autonomy in transportation,\u201d said Elefteriadou. \u201cWe will also strengthen our educational activities and technology transfer initiatives throughout the region and nationally.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column column-has-background has-light-gray-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Autonomous Vehicles and Connected Technologies<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Science Foundation awarded UFTI $1.3 million to study \u201csmart\u201d cities where autonomous and connected vehicles and infrastructure can seamlessly communicate with each other. At the state level, the Florida Department of Transportation and City of Gainesville also contributed nearly $500,000 to further explore widespread opportunities of enhanced mobility and safety for highway transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UF AVIAN team Test at TERL facility - May 2017\" width=\"1640\" height=\"923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z_bX4hCDDO4?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The team behind the project, known as AVIAN or Autonomous Vehicles at Intelligent Intersections and Advanced Networks, is currently developing and testing the necessary software and hardware to enhance traffic signal control operations while providing optimal autonomous vehicle trajectories. The multidisciplinary researchers test these traffic signals while the traffic stream consists of connected vehicles, autonomous vehicles, as well as conventional vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Connected vehicles are those that can communicate with surrounding vehicles and infrastructure using wireless communication. Autonomous vehicles can operate without a human driver using a variety of sensors such as GPS, lidar, radar, and smart cameras, as well as terrain information. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\"
