Nelms Institute for the Connected World.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22195 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/08\/Slider-Kristy-Boyer-Notext-e1513965790650-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Kristy Boyer UF CISE\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/cise\/virtual-agent-technologies-help-level-playing-field-classroom-collaboration\/\">Virtual Agent Technologies in Classroom Collaboration<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Kristy Boyer, an associate professor at the University of Florida\u2019s Department of Computer &amp; Information Science &amp; Engineering, is the principal investigator on a new National Science Foundation research award that aims to change the way collaboration is taught, using \u2013 and teaching \u2013 computer science.\u00a0An expert in human-centered computing, Boyer will use animated computer characters called intelligent virtual agents to teach and support upper elementary students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-21853 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/04\/slider-alexmorenov6-e1513965740104-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Alex Moreno\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/featured\/chemical-engineering-alumnus-invests-3m-new-uf-energy-program\/\">Chemical Engineering alumnus invests $3M in new UF Energy Program<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>With a vision for transforming the future of sustainable energy, serial entrepreneur and University of Florida alumnus Alex Moreno just invested $3 million to help create a new professorship and program in the department of chemical engineering.\u00a0With Moreno\u2019s support, the college will move forward with an integrated energy program, accessible to students across all engineering majors, that will offer a certificate and minor in energy systems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-21979 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/06\/SURF-Group9-768x511-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/engineering-education\/uf-launches-inaugural-summer-research-program\/\">UF launches inaugural summer research program<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree can now experience UF\u2019s collaborative and multidisciplinary research firsthand. The inaugural Summer Undergraduate Research at Florida (SURF) program is a 10-week immersive experience for high-performing students who are currently pursuing a bachelor\u2019s degree in their home institution.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22557 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/10\/25-090-UFTI-slider-image-only-1-e1513965699586-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"UFTI director Lily Elefteriadou with an autonomous vehicle\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/research-innovation\/a-smart-city-where-self-driving-cars-traffic-lights-pedestrians-and-cyclists-all-talk-to-one-another\/\">Transforming the Future of Transportation\u00a0<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Lily Elefteriadou, director of the University of Florida\u2019s Transportation Institute (UFTI), leads the effort on more than $15.7 million in multi-agency grants to transform the future of travel. A civil engineering professor at the University of Florida\u2019s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, Elefteriadou focuses on traffic operations and simulation modeling for both traditional transportation, as well as smart cities and self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22127 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/08\/25-075-Dickinson-NSF-notext-e1513965658996-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/che\/chemical-engineerings-department-chair-join-nsf\/\">Chemical Engineering\u2019s Department Chair to join NSF<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Professor Richard Dickinson will join the National Science Foundation this August, taking a rotation as the director of the Chemical, Biological, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET) Division. He will retain his faculty position with the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, returning to the University of Florida campus with the valuable experience of having worked within a federal research funding agency in Washington.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22281 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/09\/25-087-Gunduz-Slider-notext-e1513957046107-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/research-innovation\/uf-biomedical-engineer-honored-leader-diversity-innovation\/\">UF Biomedical Engineer Honored as Leader in Diversity and Innovation<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>For her biomedical research and commitment to diversity, Gunduz has been awarded the\u00a0Denice Denton Emerging Leader ABIE Award\u00a0by the Anita Borg Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on the advancement of women in computing.\u00a0Her research strategy involves studying neural correlates of behavior and disease, and aftereffects of stimulation in neural networks to improve deep brain stimulation therapy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22039 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/06\/slider-manuel-mse-notext-e1513965624105-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/mse\/new-chair-materials-science-engineering-named-fellow-asm\/\">New Chair of Materials Science &amp; Engineering named Fellow of ASM<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>ASM International, a professional organization for materials scientists and engineers, has announced that its Board of Trustees has elected Michele Manuel to become a Fellow of its society. Manuel was the recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and was recently named the chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Florida.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-22117 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2017\/08\/25-074-Dan-Ferris-Slider-notext-e1513965584346-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Ferris joins the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/bme\/man-behind-bionic-man\/\">The Man Behind the Bionic Man<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>A nationally recognized leader in the field of biomechanics has joined the faculty at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. Daniel Ferris, Ph.D. is the first person to hold the Robert W.
