{"id":29321,"date":"2020-10-16T14:47:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-16T19:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/?p=29321"},"modified":"2025-06-11T12:34:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T17:34:27","slug":"uf-engineer-discovers-astronomical-patterns-can-predict-sea-level-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/featured\/uf-engineer-discovers-astronomical-patterns-can-predict-sea-level-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"UF Engineer Discovers Astronomical Patterns Can Predict Sea-Level Rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2020\/10\/sun-moon-and-sunny-day-floods\/\"><em>Originally published on news.ufl.edu<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A newly discovered pattern in sunny-day flooding related to sea level rise could help coastal communities predict and plan for future high-water events.<\/p>\n<p>By comparing a century of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov\/\">sea-level data<\/a>\u00a0with records of solar and lunar activity also identified in tree rings, scientists at the University of Florida found a link between sunspots, the moon\u2019s orbit and high sea levels in the Gulf of Mexico and the U.S. Atlantic seaboard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using the pattern to forecast into the future, the researchers predict anomalously high sea levels in the Southeastern United States for periods around 2028-29, 2052, 2064, 2072, and 2098.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1029\/2020GL090024\">The finding<\/a>\u00a0takes on additional significance as these patterns combine with global sea-level rise caused by melting ice and warmer oceans, said lead author Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Ph.D., of UF\u2019s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. He named the Louisiana and Florida coastlines as well as Galveston, Texas; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; and Annapolis, Maryland as areas that will likely feel the effects of the predicted flooding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would hope that municipalities on the Southeastern and Gulf Coasts would use this to start thinking more about how to prepare,\u201d Valle-Levinson said. \u201cWhen we see flooding like we did in 2016 and 2017 that then subsides, it\u2019s easy to say, \u2018That was just a blip; it\u2019s not going to happen again.\u2019 With this prediction, we can see that not only is it going to happen again, but it might be worse, because the baseline sea level is going to be higher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While previous studies in Europe have shown links between higher sea level and solar activity, this study \u2014 done with Jonathan Martin, Ph.D., of UF\u2019s department of geological sciences \u2014 is the first to link lunar precessions and sunspots to coastal flooding. The scientists aren\u2019t sure yet of the exact connection between these astronomical forces and the atmospheric and oceanic responses that influence coastal flooding.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve shown the correlation, but we still need to find the cause,\u201d Valle-Levinson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Through UF\u2019s emerging\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ai.ufl.edu\/\">artificial intelligence initiative<\/a>, Valle-Levinson hopes to use AI to leverage more data and create a more robust version of the prediction tool.<\/p>\n<p>The study was published Wednesday in the journal Geophysical
