{"id":35653,"date":"2024-10-25T11:36:38","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T15:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/newengineer\/?p=35653"},"modified":"2025-06-11T12:26:17","modified_gmt":"2025-06-11T17:26:17","slug":"kelsey-horrace-herron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/ece\/kelsey-horrace-herron\/","title":{"rendered":"From Harry Potter to Spectroscopy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kelsey Horrace-Herron<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Title:<\/strong> Ph.D Student<br \/><strong>Advisor:<\/strong> Sandip Ray<br \/><strong>Department:<\/strong> Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in St. Louis and raised in East St. Louis, Illinois, Horace-Herron started her UF journey in the summer of 2018 when a mentor recommended her for UF\u2019s Junior Preview. \u201cThe experience was transformative, leading to an opportunity to participate in UF&#8217;s SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research at Florida) program the following summer, where I worked with Professor Swarup Bhunia,\u201d she said. Soon after that, Horrace-Herron won the Graduate School Preeminence Award and knew \u201cUF was the perfect place for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our graduate students bring a unique blend of passion, expertise, and dedication to their research. In and out of the lab, they are driven by curiosity and a commitment to advancing their field. Here are their stories, visions, and pop-culture fixations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What did you want to be growing up?<\/strong><br \/>Patent attorney. I needed a degree in a STEM field, which led me to major in computer engineering. However, life took me in a completely different direction. I&#8217;m happy with where I\u2019ve ended up so far \u2014 funny how things work out.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is the most interesting project you have worked on at UF?<\/strong><br \/>I\u2019m working on Material Authentication using NQR\/NMR Spectroscopy. One of the exciting aspects of this research is that it isn\u2019t limited to just software or hardware; I get to explore both. Additionally, to grasp the fundamentals of the spectroscopic techniques, I dive into a bit of chemistry and physics. There\u2019s also a wide range of projects that can branch off from NQR\/NMR spectroscopy, many of which have the potential to make a positive impact on society.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What are your biggest accomplishments?<\/strong><br \/>Passing my proposal defense and founding a startup called Resonance Signatures in 2021. Just this past year, on April 18, we secured Phase I SBIR funding through the National Science Foundation. We\u2019re now in the process of pursuing Phase II funding, so fingers crossed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What are you watching? <\/strong><br \/>I&#8217;m currently re-watching all the Harry Potter films \u2014 I&#8217;m a huge Harry Potter fanatic. I&#8217;m also re-reading the entire book series, diving back into the magic all over again.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s the funniest\/most memorable thing that has ever happened to you? <\/strong><br \/>A solar eclipse coincided with my birthday on April 8. That same day, I also had my proposal defense.
