Townspeople would gather at markets while the bells\u2019 sweet tones echoed overhead from the tower and served as a soundtrack to their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A carillon is a set of bells in a tower controlled and played similarly to a keyboard but with batons to pull instead of keys to press. UF\u2019s carillon tops the iconic Century Tower and has 61 bells. The tower is celebrating an anniversary this month, as it was added to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch%3Fsca_esv%3Db2f8df5153c5c5bb%26cs%3D0%26q%3DNational%2BRegister%2Bof%2BHistoric%2BPlaces%26sa%3DX%26ved%3D2ahUKEwj_s-2Ist-MAxWDsoQIHf8QAdMQxccNegQIBBAB%26mstk%3DAUtExfB52zAtFAZqi--BkSv4PzpuEuTnY8jsb0U3xiDa4iJ03ee1HoxMbixlMm1pf-OuwBA3Dl7zurwVvGuz9A0TYgSY11tcIKPpA4ziFiuWZgn_lB8ZRKiJ24JgENKr0rcOOIk%26csui%3D3&amp;data=05%7C02%7Chowardmegan%40ufl.edu%7Cfd6005146113487483ce08dd7dc5afc6%7C0d4da0f84a314d76ace60a62331e1b84%7C0%7C0%7C638805010192121489%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=frOjCzl40jahCDsOCge5QAUOAqq%2F6HM%2FpIVWndumzRQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\">National Register of Historic Places<\/a> on April 20, 1989. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With less than 200 carillons in the United States and only four in Florida, UF musicians are offered the rare opportunity to train and perform in the sky with the College of the Arts\u2019 Carillon Studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for at least the last two semesters, students of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering made up a substantial chunk of those carillonneurs. Last fall, four engineering students were among the 10 carillonneurs. This semester, three of the nine performers are engineering students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that just sort of goes to show the importance of music and the arts for a well-rounded life,\u201d said professor Laura Ellis, Ph.D., who leads UF\u2019s Carillon Studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ellis works as UF School of Music\u2019s associate director, teaching graduate organ, harpsichord, and carillon classes. She previously served two terms as the president of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the engineering students, playing the carillon is a nice right-brain diversion from intense left-brain studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the engineering students for the Carillon Studio\u2019s Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Noah Bolin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"340\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2025\/04\/noah-bolin.jpg\" alt=\"Noah Bolin\" class=\"wp-image-36637\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/4;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Noah Bolin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>An aerospace engineering freshman from Gainesville, Bolin said playing the carillon enables him to express himself \u201cbetter than math\u201d can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that I really enjoy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He grew up listening to the Gator Marching Band and joined as a trombone player. But when he saw auditions for the Carillon Studio, he said, \u201cI\u2019m gonna play the biggest instrument on campus.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolin couldn\u2019t wait to climb the few hundred stairs to play his first concert. He just needed to get his footing right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy foot has to be in the right place,\u201d he said of playing the carillon. \u201cThat I don\u2019t get, because I like to leave them in a line, like in marching band.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be it on Steve Spurrier Field or in Century Tower, playing music allows Bolin to decompress during a busy semester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Carlos Col\u00f3n-Ortiz<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2025\/04\/carlos-colon-ortiz-500x641.jpg\" alt=\"Carlos Col\u00f3n-Ortiz\" class=\"wp-image-36639\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/4;object-fit:cover;width:auto;height:450px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2025\/04\/carlos-colon-ortiz-500x641.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2025\/04\/carlos-colon-ortiz.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Carlos Col\u00f3n-Ortiz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Puerto Rico native Carlos Col\u00f3n-Ortiz has been playing piano at church since he was 11. During his freshman year, he wanted to find a way to bolster his music studies at UF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI realized the carillon is a venue that I could go into,\u201d said the third-year biomedical engineering master\u2019s student.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participating in the carillon studio helped him learn how to balance his time between school and leisure. While the studio is technically a class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something I can use to develop myself, a hobby on the side,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of the Carillon Studio, Col\u00f3n-Ortiz has competed in arrangement competitions and has earned the title of associate carillonneur from the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America. To become an associate carillonneur, he had to work on a research project about the carillon and its history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then had to pass an exam in which he recorded three songs. Col\u00f3n-Ortiz also arranges music for the UF carillon, many being songs from Puerto Rico. His arrangement \u201cAmor Real\u201d was published as licensed sheet music in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Victoria LaRose\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"484\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2025\/04\/victoria-larose.jpg\" alt=\"Victoria LaRose\u00a0\" class=\"wp-image-36641\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/4;object-fit:cover;width:auto;height:450px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Victoria LaRose\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>While walking through campus last spring, biomedical engineering student Victoria LaRose stumbled upon a carillon concert. She stopped to listen and&nbsp; watched the nearby screen projecting a video of the carillonneur in the tower.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI found it really interesting and thought I might as well,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LaRose has been playing the piano for 14 years. And like the other engineer carillonneurs, learning to play using foot pedals was challenging, but after a semester she became&nbsp; more confident.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGoing back to the piano now, it takes me a minute to get used to it again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the holiday concert in December, LaRose played \u201cGod Rest You Merry Gentlemen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anna Huber<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"342\" height=\"462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/249\/2025\/04\/anna-huber.jpg\" alt=\"Anna Huber\" class=\"wp-image-36643\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3\/4;object-fit:cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anna Huber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Anna Huber\u2019s musical roots trace back 18 years to her days as a preschooler. She played the piano before her feet could reach the pedals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a materials and science master\u2019s student, she is embarking on her fourth year playing the carillon. Her tenure started after touring the university with her sister and learning about the carillon\u2019s history; she knew she needed to experience playing the instrument 11 and a half stories above her peers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of like a bucket list thing for me,\u201d Huber said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lighter bells in the tower weigh around 20 pounds, while the heaviest bell is a couple tons. The instrument is primarily played with the feet, which was a learning curve for Huber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has always been something of an outlet,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s something I can do, and it\u2019s just for fun.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huber performed in the December holiday concert (she appeared in the holiday campus video widely circulated on social media and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6IAavq3lfrM\">YouTube<\/a>) and continued to grow her carillon skills as a member of the Spring 2025 Carillon Studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ashlyn DellaVecchia&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Second-year environmental engineering student Ashlyn DellaVecchia\u2019s career in music began in second grade when she followed her family\u2019s tradition of playing piano. She played all the way through high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At UF, she joined the Gator Marching Band as a clarinet player. Her love for music influenced her to audition for a spot in the Carillon Studio.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While she feels like her piano skills translate to the carillon, she believes the bells require more coordination between her hands and feet.
