{"id":41217,"date":"2025-08-22T15:37:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-22T19:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/?p=41217"},"modified":"2025-08-22T16:47:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-22T20:47:10","slug":"with-lasers-smoke-and-a-wind-tunnel-uf-helps-federal-agency-investigate-deadly-hurricane-maria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/in-the-headlines\/with-lasers-smoke-and-a-wind-tunnel-uf-helps-federal-agency-investigate-deadly-hurricane-maria\/","title":{"rendered":"With lasers, smoke and a wind tunnel, UF helps federal agency investigate deadly Hurricane Maria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As Floridians brace for hurricanes amid the wild weather of 2025, some University of Florida researchers have their eyes on 2017\u2019s Hurricane Maria, the deadly Category 4 storm that pummeled Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering professor and natural hazards researcher Brian Phillips, Ph.D., is leading UF\u2019s efforts in a Hurricane Maria investigation conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, known as NIST.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is increased safety and resilience amid deadly conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maria killed nearly 3,000 people and caused more than $90 billion in damage. Most of the island\u2019s wind sensors and weather stations failed as the storm raged, leaving responders and investigators with few reliable weather measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What went wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phillips and UF storm researchers are helping answer that question \u2014 and provide safety and structural recommendations \u2014 as part of NIST\u2019s Hurricane Maria investigation. The full report will be released in 2026, but NIST recently published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2025\/07\/nist-shares-preliminary-findings-hurricane-maria-investigation\">preliminary findings<\/a>; some of the hazard and structural load data was derived from wind tunnel tests at UF&#8217;s NHERI Experimental Facility in the Powell Family Structure and Materials Laboratory on UF\u2019s East Campus in Gainesville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a
