{"id":42559,"date":"2026-03-03T11:12:14","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/?p=42559"},"modified":"2026-03-03T11:12:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T16:12:18","slug":"uf-researchers-using-machine-learning-to-pursue-fusion-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eng.ufl.edu\/news\/mse\/uf-researchers-using-machine-learning-to-pursue-fusion-power\/","title":{"rendered":"UF researchers using machine learning to pursue fusion power"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ionized gas plasma contained inside a tokamak reactor is the engine that drives nuclear fusion, a potential source of green energy&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Off-normal events in the plasma are a substantial&nbsp;impediment&nbsp;to&nbsp;the success of tokamaks&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UF Nuclear Engineering researchers are using specialized machine learning algorithms&nbsp;running on&nbsp;HiPerGator&nbsp;to&nbsp;understand, predict and&nbsp;prevent off-normal plasma events&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Fusion research&nbsp;seeks&nbsp;to recreate on earth the processes responsible for powering the sun. Fusing atoms, which&nbsp;requires&nbsp;temperatures&nbsp;in excess of&nbsp;100&nbsp;million&nbsp;degrees&nbsp;Celsius, promises&nbsp;an abundant, carbon-free source of energy.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But first, researchers need to tame the beast \u2014 the ionized gas plasma held in magnetic fields inside a reactor known as a&nbsp;tokamak.&nbsp;Armed with recent federal grants, University of Florida researchers are&nbsp;working to do just that.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mse.ufl.edu\/people\/name\/chris-mcdevitt\/\">Christopher McDevitt<\/a>, Ph.D., a plasma&nbsp;physicist&nbsp;and professor in&nbsp;UF&#8217;s&nbsp;Nuclear Engineering program, understanding,&nbsp;predicting&nbsp;and&nbsp;ultimately preventing&nbsp;\u201coff-normal\u201d&nbsp;plasma behaviors inside a tokamak is the central challenge facing researchers around the world as they try to harness the energy released by fusing atoms together.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2026\/03\/fusion-machine-learning\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/news.ufl.edu\/2026\/03\/fusion-machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read full story on UF News.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Florida researchers are using machine learning on the HiPerGator supercomputer to tame the extreme plasma inside tokamaks.
