In an awards ceremony celebrating dozens of University of Florida international students \u2014 and the faculty and staff who help them excel \u2014 two engineering students took home some notable hardware. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Held in late March and hosted by the UF International Center, the awards ceremony honored UF international students who mix academic excellence with student outreach, service and leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Computer science master\u2019s student Joshita Arora and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) master\u2019s student Uthra Madhavan were among four UF students who won the Outstanding Master\u2019s and Professional International Student Award. <\/p>\n\n\n
Born in India, Arora earned her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with a minor in computer science from Punjab Engineering College. Before starting her graduate work at UF in 2024, she worked in data science, mechanical design, statistical analysis and machine learning.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDuring her time at UF, Joshita has distinguished herself not only through technical excellence but through her rare ability to engage deeply with foundational questions at the intersection of AI and human understanding,\u201d Joel Parker, Engineering\u2019s associate director of Experiential Learning, said at the ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parker cited Arora\u2019s \u201cunusual clarity\u201d in the relationship \u2014 and possibilities \u2014 between humans and intelligent systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In her master\u2019s thesis, Arora studied the structural properties of neural networks, while also exploring broader questions about the nature of intelligence and cognition in AI systems. After graduation, she plans to find a research job that explores the intersection of computer science and applied mathematics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWinning the Outstanding Masters and Professional Award is incredibly meaningful to me,\u201d Arora said. \u201cRepresenting the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, as well as my home country, came with a strong sense of responsibility to contribute thoughtfully and make that representation count. More than anything, I see this award as a reflection of the support and opportunities I\u2019ve received here. I\u2019m deeply grateful for that recognition.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n

Born in India, Madhavan exemplifies the spirit of the award, earning a 3.95 GPA amid a challenging year, Parker told the crowd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe works on a Department of Energy-supported grant that is about cyber-informed engineering projects,\u201d Parker said. \u201cShe created and piloted a desalination exercise that links cyber-risk scenarios to real-world treatment outcomes, building optimization models that balance cost, energy, maintenance and resilience. This work not only gave her fellow students valuable hands-on experience, but also positioned the University of Florida as a credible partner through these national-level research labs.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also in late March, Madhavan learned she was selected as the\u202fOutstanding Gator Engineering M.S. Scholar Award for 2026 among thousands of engineering graduate\u202fstudents.\u202fShe said these awards reflect her academic journey and commitment to creating meaningful impacts through engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThroughout my time at the University of Florida, I have consistently sought opportunities to grow, not only academically, but also through mentoring students, participating in workshops and engaging in initiatives that expand my technical and professional skills,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After graduation, she plans to find an electrical engineering job that will sharpen her skills and provide practical experience with advanced engineering systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am particularly interested in roles that allow me to apply both my industry experience and the new technical knowledge gained at UF to solve real-world problems and contribute to impactful engineering solutions,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
