Design and engineering consulting firm, Kimley-Horn\u2019s internship program pairs students like Sarasota local, Emily Griffiths with a mentor to guide them through the job\u202fportion\u202fand a\u202fbuddy\u202fwho can acquaint them with the company environment.<\/p>\n
This past summer, Emily, a University of Florida Engineering student landed an internship at the Sarasota office of Kimley-Horn working\u202fon a\u202fvariety of projects\u202fincluding public park improvements, drainage system design, a tiny\u202fhouse development.<\/p>\n
Emily grew up\u202fin Sarasota\u202fand spent a lot of time around the water.\u202fAfter graduating from Sarasota Military Academy, she began her\u202ffirst\u202fyear of college as an Environmental Science major at\u202fthe\u202fUniversity of Florida, but shortly after decided to change her major to\u202fEnvironmental Engineering.<\/p>\n
One of Emily\u2019s Kimley-Horn mentors was Project Manager, Trenton Strackbein. He graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Civil Engineering and was a mentee himself back in 2013.<\/p>\n
\u201cEmily has the ability to pick things up quickly,\u201d says Strackbein. And in his experience, the more outgoing students tend to do better in business. The New Engineer approach utilized by UF College of Engineering puts the focus on developing creative, innovative problem solvers with the qualities of a dynamic leader. Strackbein\u202fstresses the importance of understanding the business side of engineering since engineers are often called on to meet with city staff and officials and in some cases are the last\u202fword\u202fwhen it comes to\u202fthings like drainage disputes.\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n
Emily\u202fgraduated in December from the University of Florida and\u202fhas\u202faccepted a full-time\u202fposition\u202fas a Civil Analyst with Kimley-Horn.\u202fShe\u202fis\u202fexcited to begin a new chapter backed by a\u202fnetwork of\u202fsupport she has already.<\/p>\n
