Commencement Awards

The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2024 Commencement Awards.  
 
This year, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering will be recognizing recipients of the following awards:

Two students will be selected as Outstanding Gator Engineering Scholars, one who entered UF as a freshman (Four-Year Scholar) and one who entered as a transfer student  (Two-Year Scholar).

  • Outstanding Gator Engineering Four-Year Scholar
  • Outstanding Gator Engineering Two-Year Scholar

One student will be selected for each of the following awards:

  • Dean Joseph Weil Engineering Leadership Award
    This award will be presented to a student who has continually exhibited outstanding leadership and organizational abilities in promoting ideals, ethics and principles of engineering and the engineering profession, for the betterment of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.
  •  Dean Jonathan F.K. Earle Engineering Leadership Award
    This award will be presented to a student who has continually exhibited outstanding service to the community and University, leadership, and dedication to the ideals, ethics and principles of engineering and the engineering profession, for the betterment of present and future students of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and University of Florida.
  • Dean Cammy Abernathy Community & Inclusion Award
    This award will be presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding service through a strong commitment to creating a safe, welcoming community and a shared purpose that builds a sense of belonging and togetherness while celebrating differences in identities, thoughts, and abilities, to seek to provide equitable access to opportunity for the betterment of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and University of Florida.
  • There will also be an Outstanding Gator Engineering M.S. Award for graduating Masters Students.

All recipients must be engineering seniors set to graduate in the Spring, Summer, or Fall of 2024. In order to assist the committee in their search, please be as specific as possible when filling out the application.

Applicants are able to apply for more than one award.

    Please check the awards for which you wish to be considered. Students graduating in May with a B.S. degree can be considered for Outstanding Scholar awards but cannot be selected for both. Students graduating in May with a M.S. Degree can only apply for the M.S. Outstanding Gator Engineering Award.
    The committee considers academic awards, honoraries, research projects, published papers, convention presentations, honors theses, overall grade point average, etc. in selecting recipients of this award. The committee is in search of someone who exemplifies the title of scholar.
    This Award will be presented to a student who has continually exhibited outstanding service to the community and university, leadership, and dedication to the ideals, ethics and principles of engineering and the engineering profession, for the betterment of present and future students of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and University of Florida.

  • Bio and Resume

  • A one-paragraph autobiographical summary of no more than 220 words. Your submission will serve as the basis for the description included in the commencement program.
  • Denote level of award (international, national, state, local, etc.).
  • Include the topic of your research project(s), supervisor, and accomplishments.
  • Explain with whom you worked, duration of the internship, duties, and accomplishments.
  • List dates, service provided, and organization involved. Please be as specific as possible.
  • List location of target population served, dates, service provided, and organization involved. Please be as specific as possible.
  • In 1,000 words or less, explain what makes you an outstanding Gator Engineering Scholar at the University of Florida. Those applying for a Dean Earle, Dean Weil, or Dean Abernathy Award should instead submit a personal essay.
  • Confirm & Submit

    If I am selected as a Gator Engineering Commencement Award recipient this semester, I authorize the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering to release any of the above information I have provided to the public in any manner it shall choose. I consider this information I have provided as not protected under privacy regulations. I will make myself available to have a photograph taken for the commencement program within two weeks after announcement of the awards.
