UF in Iceland – Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Spring – May 5 – 12, 2024

UF in Iceland – Renewable Energy and Sustainability is an eight-day program that gives undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to understand and appreciate first-hand the sustainable renewable energy solutions in Iceland. Today, almost 100% of the electricity consumed in Iceland (population of 368,000) come from renewable energy sources. Students will learn about a wide range of renewable technologies such as geothermal energy, hydroelectric power, and energy policies in Iceland from experts in the fields. The program will include seminars from experts in energy sources and policies, tours of geothermal and hydroelectric power plants, and other visits to industries related to sustainability practices in Iceland. 

Location

Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic, with a population of 364,134 and an area of 103,000 km2 (40,000 sq mi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population.

Iceland performs well in many measures of well-being relative to most other countries in the Better Life Index. Iceland ranks at the top in jobs and earnings, environmental quality and social connections, and above the average in income and wealth, subjective well-being, health status, personal security, civic engagement, and education and skills. About 100% of the total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from domestically produced renewable energy sources. [1]

Housing

You will be sharing a double-room together with another student from the program in a hotel. Daily breakfast will be provided.

  • Interest in renewable energy and sustainability
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Must be in good disciplinary standing
  • Instructor approval

    • 2024 Graduate Program Fee: $3,910
  • UF deposit: $425
  • Includes accommodation, daily breakfast, airport pickup, local transportation, insurance & students fees, academic course, excursions
