Summer A: May 7 – June 16, 2023

UF in Osnabrück – Sustainability & Innovation in Engineering & Planning is a 6-week program is organized by Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in collaboration with Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Germany to increase student engagement in international experiences through a unique study tour for all engineers.

About the program

The goal of the program is to introduce students to new ways of thinking about the real-world challenges of sustainability and their potential role in solving such problems with innovative approaches. Students can earn 6 UF credits through this interdisciplinary program that enables students to enhance their knowledge in engineering, life sciences, and planning processes and combine it with hands-on lab work and company visits.

Students will benefit from the application oriented and interdisciplinary approach of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences to address and solve major problems on the way to a sustainable use of natural resources and innovative development.

Location

Osnabrück is located in Lower Saxony in Northwestern Germany. The peace agreement between Protestants and Catholics that helped end the 30 Years’ War was brokered here, earning it the nickname, “City of Peace.”

  • ABE 4932: Special Topics in Engineering and Environmental Planning (3 UF Credits)

This course surveys recent developments towards sustainability in various research areas of engineering and environmental planning. It emphasizes an interdisciplinary, application-oriented approach and critical thinking. Lab work and site visits complement theoretical units in the classroom. The course comprises the topics of Energy, Technological Innovation in Agriculture, E-Mobility and Materials.

  • ABE 4932 Methods of Innovation Workshop

In this intensive workshop, students choose one of two methods of innovation, which they learn about through a mix of theoretical input and practical application. In groups of four to six participants, they apply the new method to case studies of real-world sustainability challenges.

Workshop A – Design Thinking: This creative and agile innovation method entails defining target needs and methods, generating innovative solutions, and testing the strongest solution through prototyping.

Workshop B – Design of Experiments: This statistical experimental methodology is used to analyze and optimize a large number of industrial processes. Goals include improvement of product quality and reliability, reduction of costs, and increase of process robustness.
