University of Florida Unveils New Engineering Building Designed for Next Wave of Innovation
The University of Florida’s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering celebrated the opening of its Laboratory for Engineering Excellence on Thursday, October 7, 2021. The new steel and glass building is meant to provide educational enrichment for engineering students, employing a nontraditional classroom style where lectures are watched online and classroom time is dedicated to hands-on work. Classes in this building are for all disciplines of engineering students, with a particular focus on leadership and innovation.

Trusting Tech: Artificial Intelligence Can Combat Deepfakes, Cybercrimes and Snooping
Explore recently highlighted the research of Damon Woodard, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), and Sanjeev Koppal, Ph.D., an assistant professor in ECE. Woodard is using AI methods to develop algorithms that can detect deepfakes, while Koppal is building cameras that are intelligent about capturing data in order to preserve people's privacy.

University of Florida Honors Integration Pioneers with Historical Marker
The University of Florida unveiled a historical marker honoring the integration pioneers who led the charge to desegregate the institution. The marker honors the efforts of Virgil Hawkins, one of six African Americans who sued the university after being denied admission in 1949 solely based on their race. Other pioneers recognized on the marker include George Starke, the first Black student admitted at UF; W. George Allen, the first African American to graduate with a law degree from UF; and Stephan Mickle, the first to receive a bachelor’s degree in 1965.

Duke Energy Foundation Awards $734,000 in Grants to Support Workforce Development in Florida
Duke Energy is investing $100,000 in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to create the Energy Sustainability, Technology and Resiliency Testing Hub and Certificate Program. The department plans to use the grant to provide scholarship opportunities for students who are earning a Sustainable and Resilient Energy Engineering Certificate.

Vladimir Rakov, Ph.D., professor in ECE and co-director of the International Center for Lightning Research & Testing (ICLRT) has been awarded a $1M grant from the NSF for his project, “Lightning Studies Based on Measurements Spanning the Ranges from Radio Frequency to Optical (including Infrared and Ultraviolet) to Gamma-Rays.”

#18 Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs Among Public Institutions
Engineering College Moves Up in Rankings of Best Undergraduate Programs
The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering rose to No. 18 from 19th for best undergraduate engineering programs among public universities, and eight of its 11 engineering specialties were listed among the Top 20 in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report rankings. Positioned among the Top 20 undergraduate engineering schools in the nation for four straight years, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering is also the highest ranked engineering college in the State of Florida, as reported by U.S. News & World Report in their assessment of the “Best Undergraduate Schools.”

UF, IBM Partner for Virtual Hackathon
The University of Florida, in partnership with IBM, has called on the country’s brightest minds to join a virtual innovation challenge aimed at addressing the Sunshine State’s most pressing conservation issues. Innovators of all experience levels were invited to join the IBM Data Science Community by participating in the Florida Hacks with IBM hackathon, an event where students are asked to help combat the significant observable effects occurring in the environment.
