How to become a Student Safety Engineer
- Complete all UF offered EHS trainings that are applicable to your research.
- Attend five Safety Seminars offered by the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering; or receive 5 hours of comparable external safety training;
- Serve as an active member of your department’s Student Safety Council for at least one semester.
- Demonstrate practical application of safety knowledge through completion of a case study of the student’s choosing (prior approval required*).
- The following must be addressed in the report and/or presentation to the Safety Steering Committee:
- Background of issue
- Risk assessment
- Propose a specific solution to this safety issue and implementation plan
- Proposed a systematic hazard identification mechanism to eliminate future issues with this safety concern
- Metric to track the effectiveness and success of implementation of proposed solution
Other details:
- Validation of completion of certificate requirements will be conducted by the College’s Engineering Safety Steering committee or relevant faculty or staff.
- Certificates will be awarded at the student attribute awards ceremony in the spring.
- Student will be listed as a Student Safety Engineer on COE’s website as a credential to be recognized by future employers.
