The University of Florida’s student chapter of Materials Advantage – a program for materials science and engineering majors – placed first in the TMS Materials Bowl on Feb. 16.
The team – Glenn Bean, Hunter Henderson, Peter Feldtmann and Steven Chiu – defeated 11 other university teams in the Jeopardy-style trivia competition with single elimination rounds.
“I feel great about the win,” said Feldtmann, a materials science and engineering senior. “Before the competition started I was afraid that I would not be able to answer any questions.”
To prepare for the competition, the four engineering students studied the TMS member journal and reviewed material in the EMA 3010 textbook: Material Science and Engineering: An Introduction by William Callister.
The chapter has competed in the TMS Materials Bowl previously, but this was their first win at the competition. Each team member won $250, and the chapter received $500.
The chapter’s facility advisor, MSE assistant professor Michele Manuel, is very proud of the team’s accomplishment.
“They represented the department well,” Manuel said.
The TMS Bowl is an event hosted by the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society at its annual meeting and exhibition. This year marked the 143rd meeting.
