Dr. Jose Principe receives 2016 Faculty Achievement Award

picture-355-1379445149Jose C. Principe, a distinguished professor of electrical engineering, was named a recipient of the 2016 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Achievement Award. These annual awards recognize faculty members from SEC universities who have outstanding records in teaching, research and scholarship.

Principe’s area of expertise is in adaptive dynamical systems, computational intelligence and machine learning with applications to brain dynamics, computational neuroscience, epilepsy and brain machine interfaces. He is the the founder and director of the Computational NeuroEngineering Laboratory at UF.

He has delivered more than 150 lectures at some of the top international conferences and research institutions, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering, and the International Neural Network Society.

To be eligible for the SEC Faculty Achievement Award, the individual must be a teacher or scholar at an SEC university; have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching; and have a record of scholarship that is recognized nationally and/or internationally.

As part of his award, Principle will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC; he also goes on to become the University of Florida’s nominee for the 2016 SEC Professor of the Year Award. The SEC Professor of the Year, to be named in April, receives an additional $15,000 honorarium and will be recognized at the SEC Awards Dinner.
