From jar openers to key grippers, devices designed by UF students help people with disabilities

While access has improved for people with disabilities, small inconveniences still exist everywhere. To solve that — piece by piece — students from the University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions and the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering are helping design 3D-printed assistive devices for locals with unique needs.

UF Solar Gators unveil sleeker sun racer to go the distance

Flare, a student-built solar-powered race car, will compete in a multi-day endurance race where teams aim to complete the most laps powered entirely by the sun.

From the Swamp to Capitol Hill, UF student talks engineering with lawmakers

As part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), UF freshman Jayden Nargen traveled to Washington, D.C., for IEEE-USA’s Congressional Visit Day, joining engineers from across the country to meet with lawmakers and advocate for policies impacting research funding and STEM workforce development.

Making connections: Original steel teaching sculpture gets a facelift

December 9, 2025

Standing 14 feet tall and serving no obvious purpose, the steel sculpture located outside Weil Hall is a jumble of beams, bolts, welds and supports fastened into a concrete pad. Part of the revitalized Engineering Plaza — also home to the revamped Engineering Clock Tower — at the corner of Gale Lemerand and Stadium Road, the nondescript-looking structure was recently sandblasted and repainted (orange and blue, naturally).

iVelas: A launchpad for transfer students

iVelas, short for Interdisciplinary Virtual Exchanges with Liberal Arts and Sciences, brings together the University of Florida’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, Santa Fe College, the College of Central Florida and Sao Paulo State University in Brazil. The idea is to give ambitious students early access to research, global collaboration and the kind of real-world problem solving that builds both competence and confidence.

Born in Imo State, Nigeria, the fifth of six children, Cynthia Eluagu worked hard to stand out in her family. She did so by earning a bachelor’s degree in engineering with honors in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering.
