The University of Florida’s supercomputer, known as HiPerGator, is being put through the paces on more than 800 research projects across all 16 of UF’s colleges, accelerating impactful work that might have previously been unfeasible or even impossible. Built with $50 million in support from UF alumnus Chris Malachowsky and tech company NVIDIA, which he co-founded, the machine is one of the fastest AI supercomputers in academia.

UF is expanding its successful pilot program, which aims to equip Florida youth with essential skills needed in an emerging AI-enabled workforce, to 12 school districts.

Going beyond pregnancy and COVID-19, the world could someday soon come to rely on at-home tests for many diseases thanks in part to AI-fueled improvements. UF scientists have used artificial intelligence tools to simplify a test that works for both hepatitis C and SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The simplified test happens in one small test tube in just a few minutes. With further refinement, it could arrive at doctor’s offices soon and, one day, become available as home tests that are as easy as a pregnancy test.
