The University of Florida’s supercomputer, known as HiPerGator, is being put through the paces on more than 800 research projects across all 16 of UF’s colleges, accelerating impactful work that might have previously been unfeasible or even impossible. Built with $50 million in support from UF alumnus Chris Malachowsky and tech company NVIDIA, which he co-founded, the machine is one of the fastest AI supercomputers in academia.

University of Florida faculty members with a wide range of expertise in space-related research are coming together to form the UF Space Mission Institute, with $2.5 million in support from UF President Ben Sasse’s strategic funding initiative.

A space institute designed to expand exploration of the cosmos, a project to improve construction through robotic automation and AI, an initiative to propel the university to global prominence in sports performance, and an effort to improve agriculture and environmental sustainability are among four new initiatives receiving strategic funding at the University of Florida.

David P. Arnold, a professor in ECE, was one of two UF researchers to be named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. Arnold focuses on research in electrophysics.

The Consortium for Nuclear Forensics, a UF-led team of 32 scientists and engineers at 16 universities, has been awarded a five-year, $26.4 million grant from the DOE’s National Nuclear Security Agency to develop new nuclear forensic technologies and to train the next generation of nuclear sleuths to use them.

Bachelor’s, master’s and specialist’s degree graduates for the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Public Health and Health Professions, and the College of Veterinary Medicine will begin their ceremony at 7 p.m. Dec. 15.

Dr. Benjamin Keselowsky has achieved the distinguished title of Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), the highest honor bestowed upon outstanding biomaterials scientists by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE).

The Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL) has inducted former UF dean of engineering, Cammy R. Abernathy, Ph.D., as member. The ceremony also saw the naming of twelve mid-career researchers from throughout the state of Florida as “Rising Stars” by the academy, including two from UF, and a UF alumnus.
