The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science family of journals, has elected José C. Príncipe, Ph.D., as one of seven faculty and staff from the University of Florida, to the newest class of AAAS Fellows.

David O. Prevatt, Ph.D., wrote a guest essay for The Washington Post and was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered program, the Black Network News Channel, and The Weather Channel.

Gary J. Miller, Ph.D., (BSME ’70/Ph.D. ’77) was honored at the fall 2021 commencement ceremony with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Distinguished alumnus awards are presented to an alumna or an alumnus of the university who has excelled in their chosen field and have performed outstanding service for the university. Dr. Miller is co-founder and Executive Vice President for Research and Development (Emeritus) of Exactech, Inc., Gainesville, Florida.  Exactech was incorporated in 1985 and develops, manufactures and distributes orthopaedic implants.

An all-female team of “hackers” was declared the winner of a national technology contest – Florida Hacks with IBM – that called on participants to discover potential solutions to combat the effects of climate change. The team was comprised of three current Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering students and a recent graduate.

Christopher Ferraro, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering, was featured in Explore magazine for his research on making the world’s favorite building material stronger, more durable and more sustainable.

The NSF has awarded $1.4 million to the University of Florida for a collaborative project to optimize operation of undersea robots (ROVs) for offshore industries and workers. Led by Eric Jing Du, Ph.D., a civil associate professor within the Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment (ESSIE), the project leverages the combined research of an interdisciplinary team within the University of Florida.
