Teaching assignment – 1/11/2023 DRAFT

Teaching assignment – 1/11/2023 DRAFT

Teaching is one of the core activities of our university, and all faculty members are expected to contribute to the teaching mission of our department.  Teaching assignments (FTE and courses) are under the purview of the department chair.  This policy outlines the minimum expectations.

Teaching assignment FTE

Teaching FTE for a course depends on the number of credits, number of students, course modality, time assigned for peer mentors and TAs.  The baseline is: a 3 credit course with < 50 students in person or flipped is 25% FTE.  Other FTE assignments vary.  The table below gives some guidance and examples.

FTE is per section.  Recitation sections are calculated with the lecture portion as long as a TA hold the recitation

IPPD coaching: 1.5 cr per semester.  In addition, revenue returned to the department (typically $6,000 for the year), will be made available to the faculty coach for travel, equipment, and other research expenses.  This can count towards the Standard FTE Assignment if officially assigned by the department chair.  Alternatively, $6,000 can be paid as an overload (additional pay).

Standard FTE assignments are as follows:

Instructional Faculty: 75%
Tenure-track Assistant Professors: 25% (1+1)
Associate & Full Professors: 50%/25% (2+1)

Deviations from the standard can be considered based on: formal administrative assignment, research activity, partial buyout of teaching, etc.

Research and individual instruction course

Research courses such as EGN4912, EGS7979, and EGN7980, as well as other individual instruction courses such as EGS6940 do not contribute to the standard FTE assignment.

Effort Reporting

Every faculty member reports how their time was spent between Teaching, Research, and Service at the end of each semester.  It is expected to be a true accounting on how time was spent.  If it deviates significantly from the assignment, a discussion with the department chair is required.
