Building on an already strong reputation as one of the top public universities in America, the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering is now ranked No. 23 overall among public universities by U.S. News & World Report (USNWR), moving up one spot since the magazine’s assessment of “Best Graduate Schools” last year, and has earned high marks from industry leaders looking for top-shelf engineering talent.

The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering and the Engineering Leadership Institute (ELI) hosted Dr. John L. Anderson, Ph.D., president of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), for the seminar “The Future of Engineering and Computer Science” on February 21. The seminar series brings world-class leaders in industry and academia to UF as part of the engineering leadership development program of the ELI.

A team from the University of Florida’s Thompson Earth Systems Institute (TESI), the College of Education and the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering will partner with the Calvert Marine Museum in Maryland on a three-year, $1.3 million project funded by the National Science Foundation to teach Florida middle school teachers and students how to use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify fossil shark teeth.

The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering graduate engineering online program continues to be a Top 10 program among public universities. It is ranked #12 nationally as determined by U.S. News & World Report. It also ranks No. 8 nationally for providing online curriculum to U.S. veterans looking to re-enter the workplace. The UF online graduate engineering program is provided via UF EDGE (Electronic Delivery of Gator Engineering).

An all-female team of “hackers” was declared the winner of a national technology contest – Florida Hacks with IBM – that called on participants to discover potential solutions to combat the effects of climate change. The team was comprised of three current Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering students and a recent graduate.

The first annual student Internet of Things (IoT) Design Competition recently wrapped up after nearly two months of competition. The national competition, hosted by the University of Florida IoT Students Club, required teams to design, build, and demonstrate the functionality of an IoT edge device to solve a real-world problem.

The University of Florida, in partnership with IBM, is calling on the country’s brightest minds to join a virtual innovation challenge aimed at addressing the Sunshine State’s most pressing conservation issues. Innovators of all experience levels are invited to join the IBM Data Science Community by participating in the Florida Hacks with IBM hackathon, an event where students will be asked to help combat the significant observable effects occurring in the environment.

 Each year, 300 university-level teams from more than 50 countries compete in qualifiers as they head towards the Vex Robotics World Championships. The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering is ranked among the Top 25 public graduate engineering schools in the U.S. and the No. 1 engineering school in the State of Florida, according to the 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools ranking. 

UF continues to climb in online education as seen in the 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings. The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering graduate engineering online program climbed four spots to No. 11 nationally, and it is now ranked No. 9 among public universities.
