Professional Service

A faculty member who has published journal papers will likely be requested to serve as a reviewer for a scholarly journal. This is an excellent entry point into professional service.  With consistent service as a journal reviewer, one may be invited to serve on an Editorial Board or as an Associate Editor. Regarding research-related service, one area to focus on is to serve on conference technical program committees. These activities can help the faculty member develop a network that can be beneficial when seeking external letters for promotion and tenure.

Another example of service is to become involved in the professional technical society on committees for one’s discipline at the local, regional, national, and international levels. Another important professional service is to serve on NSF, NIH, and other federal agency proposal review panels to become familiar with the federal agency proposal review process.
