The Industrial Revolution, which started in 19th century Britain, marks an era of unprecedented, sustained growth where many aspects of human life were fundamentally altered. Amongst these tides of change, some scholars believe, is nestled the birth of the Engineer. While people had been doing engineering work much earlier, the professionalization of innovation and design work during this time marked the emergence of Engineering as a profession of its own. This course aims to return to engineering “ground zero” to explore the development of engineering practices in England and allow students to examine engineering successes and failures from different eras of British history, while considering the legal, social, and ethical considerations that the engineers on those projects would have had to wrestle with.

Site visits highlighting some of England’s engineering successes and failures, will provide the framework for conversations on the changes of the engineering discipline over time and the differences in how engineering is practiced outside of the United States. Furthermore, we will engage with the human centered nature of engineering through an exploration of the impact engineering success and failure has on the communities around them making it an excellent choice for both engineers as well as students interested in the ways these types of events can shape individuals, their communities, and society.
