With the growth expected in computer and engineering jobs over the next decade, impending workforce demands cannot be met without developing the skills of racial and ethnic minorities historically underrepresented in these areas.

Juan Gilbert, the Banks Preeminence Chair in Engineering and chair of UF’s Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE), and Shaundra Daily, associate professor in CISE and director of the Digital Arts and Sciences Program, are teaming up to support more efforts to help more minorities study computers and engineering at the graduate level.

They plan to create a data portal to collect data on and examine the effectiveness of various mentoring strategies. The researchers hope to identify which programs are best suited to be piloted at institutions around the country.
