Roozbeh Tabrizian Named Nelms Rising Star Professor
The Warren B. Nelms Institute for the Connected World has named a new Nelms Rising Star Professor, Roozbeh Tabrizian, PhD. The Nelms Rising Star Professorship is awarded to junior faculty (assistant and associate professors) who have shown extraordinary promise early in their career in research, education, workforce development, broadening participation, or other outreach activities, relevant to the mission of the institute.
Simmons selected as ASEE Fellow
Denise R. Simmons, Ph.D., PE, PMP, LEED-AP, was selected as a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for Exemplary Contributions to Civil Engineering Workforce Development.

Eleven students from the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, as well as nine alumni, were selected to receive awards from the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP).
NRF awards UF researcher Loss Prevention Ring of Excellence Award
The National Retail Federation (NRF) has announced its recognition of outstanding loss prevention professionals for the 2023 NRF PROTECT Awards. Among the esteemed honorees is Read Hayes, Ph.D., a University of Florida research scientist and director of the UF SaferPlaces Laboratory.
Erin Jackson’s university-wide commencement speech
Erin Jackson (MSE ’15) gave the university-wide commencement speech at the ceremony on Friday, May 5. Jackson is an Olympic gold medalist, a history maker and a Gator. She won the women’s 500-meter race in speed skating in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, becoming the first American to win that race since 1994 and the first Black American woman in history to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual sport. Additionally, she graduated UF cum laude in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering.

Gator Engineering alumni address graduating students, new engineers
Two Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering alumni spoke to graduating seniors from the college at this spring’s commencement and Order of the Engineer induction ceremonies. Tara Battle, BSME ’10, spoke at the Order of the Engineer induction ceremony on May 4, and Jenn Gustetic, BSAE ’05, addressed students at the bachelors recognition ceremony on May 5.
