New Student FAQs

When can I meet with an academic advisor?

You’ll meet with an academic advisor during your UF Preview session—there’s no need to schedule an appointment before that. During Preview, you’ll have multiple opportunities to connect with an advisor in both group and one-on-one sessions. Your advisor will help you select and register for your first-semester courses. If you have questions after Preview, feel free to email us at advising@eng.ufl.edu.

If I have AP credit for Calculus, do I still need to take the ALEKS placement exam?

Yes. All engineering students are strongly encouraged to take the ALEKS placement exam, even if you have AP credit. ALEKS helps determine the best placement for both math and chemistry courses, and your UF calculus placement will depend on:
Which AP Calculus course you took
Your AP exam score
Your ALEKS placement score
Calculus is the foundation for many upper-division engineering courses, so proper placement is essential for your long-term success.

What if I’m not sure which type of engineering I want to study?

That’s perfectly normal! Many students enter UF with a general interest in engineering but are still exploring specific disciplines. A large number of students change their engineering major within the first year.
For now, choose the major that best fits your current interests—you’re not locked in. Your first-year advisor will support you in refining your goals and making any adjustments to your major.

What if I don’t have a strong background in math or chemistry?

If you’re not fully prepared for college-level calculus or chemistry, you can enroll in:
MAC1147: Precalculus
CHM1025: Introduction to Chemistry
Your ALEKS placement test results will guide the best course placement for you.
A strong foundation in math and science is essential for success in the engineering curriculum.
Some engineering majors may require you to take summer courses to catch up on critical tracking requirements in math and chemistry. If you’re unsure, reach out to your advisor before the end of the Drop/Add period to discuss your academic plan and ensure you’re on track.
