Why should engineering students study abroad?

Study abroad helps engineering students build technical, professional, and intercultural skills while earning academic credit. International experience also strengthens your résumé and prepares you for a global engineering career.

Can engineering students study abroad and still graduate on time?

Yes. With early planning and academic advising, most engineering students can study abroad without delaying graduation.

When is the best time to study abroad?

Summer is the most popular option, but many students also study abroad during the fall or spring. The best time depends on your major and course sequence.

Will my study abroad courses count toward my engineering degree?

Yes, many courses can fulfill major requirements, technical electives, general education, or elective credits. Course approvals should be completed before departure.

Can students take courses taught in [host institution language], and are those credits approved for transfer?

Yes. Many partner universities offer courses in the local language or in English. Credits may transfer if they are approved by your academic advisor before you study abroad.

Do grades earned abroad affect my UF GPA?

It depends on the program. Grades from exchange and UF-sponsored programs are letter graded and count toward your UF GPA. Grades from non-UF programs appear on your transcript but generally do not affect your UF GPA. Please refer here for study abroad academic policies. 

Can I conduct research for credit while abroad?

Yes. Some programs offer research opportunities that may count for academic credit with department approval. Please check out the internship programs here. 

Can I complete an internship abroad for credit?

Yes. Engineering students can participate in approved international internships for academic credit through select programs. Please check out the internship programs here. 

What is the average cost of studying abroad?

Costs vary by program, but you should budget for tuition, housing, airfare, meals, local transportation, insurance, and personal expenses. Many semester exchange programs cost about the same as studying at UF.

Can I use financial aid or scholarships?

Yes. Many forms of financial aid and scholarships can be applied to approved study abroad programs. Students are encouraged to apply early. Please contact Student Financial Aid for information. 

How far in advance should I start planning?

Start planning 9–12 months before departure. This allows time for course approvals, scholarships, passports, visas, and applications.

Can I study abroad if I don’t speak another language?

Yes. Many engineering programs offer courses taught entirely in English.

Can I travel during my program?

Yes, as long as you meet all academic and program requirements.

Plan early, meet with your academic advisor, apply for scholarships, budget carefully, and complete all required pre-departure requirements.
