The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering offers international research opportunities that allow you to gain hands-on experience, collaborate with experts around the world, and explore engineering in a global context.
Whether through a UF-sponsored program or an independent placement, conducting research abroad helps you build valuable skills, broaden your academic and cultural perspective, and strengthen your resume for what’s next.
UF Research Programs
Spend 6 weeks at Newcastle University conducting supervised research in your discipline. You’ll be paired with a faculty mentor who will guide your work and help you develop new research techniques. After the summer, you can apply to stay at Newcastle through our exchange partner program in the fall or spring semesters.
Each year, a cohort of 6 U.S. students conducts research at Seoul National University, South Korea’s top national university. Students explore innovative smart city technologies through SNU’s Smart City Engineering Program.
Spend 10 weeks at RWTH Aachen University, one of the world’s top science and technology institutions. Students work closely with faculty on research projects and earn 6 UF credits. Selected students receive a €2000 scholarship from RWTH to help with living expenses.
SUIRP supports undergraduate researchers from all disciplines in conducting 8–10 weeks of research abroad. Students must have at least one year of research experience at UF and must secure their own international research placement before applying.
Non-UF Research Opportunities
Explore global research programs offered by external institutions and organizations. These programs typically do not award academic credit, but many offer stipends, housing, and mentorship, making them excellent options for hands-on international research experience.
RISE is a summer program funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), open to undergraduates in STEM fields. Interns are matched with PhD mentors and work in university research labs across Germany for 2–3 months.
Conduct meaningful research abroad while immersing yourself in local culture. This summer program offers a variety of academic research placements in STEM fields across five countries, with personalized projects and faculty mentorship.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), including international REU sites. These highly competitive summer programs offer hands-on research experiences across many disciplines, with full funding and faculty mentorship.
