Assistant Director: David Whitney
David Whitney serves as the Assistant Director of the University of Florida’s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Innovation Institute. In this role, Whitney works with Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering faculty and students to conceive, launch, fund, and operate tech-based, innovation-driven companies. He also teaches Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Engineers to graduate and undergraduate Gator Engineers.
Whitney is an experienced investor, management consultant, and university instructor who helps companies – from startup ventures to industry-leading conglomerates – develop and implement innovation strategies and execution plans that lead to increased profitability. David’s strengths are in enhancing companies’ operating results and improving financial performance. In performing these roles, he possesses extensive operating experience, sales and business development skills, expertise in building and operating winning teams, and thought leadership involving innovation practices, technology entrepreneurship, and corporate intrapreneurship.
In addition to his UF roles and management consulting responsibilities, Whitney is a licensed investment banker and an active angel investor. In these activities, Whitney advises companies on strategy and operations, helps companies raise early stage and growth capital, and assists on M&A transactions, recapitalizations, management buyouts, and going-private transactions. David previously worked as a senior investment banker at Duncan-Williams, Inc. and holds Series 7 and 63 licenses. Whitney founded and continues to serve as the Managing Director of Energent Ventures, a private equity firm headquartered in Gainesville, FL. Energent invests equity and debt capital in companies ranging from startups to emerging growth to later stage.
Before forming Energent Ventures, Whitney was a Senior Manager in Deloitte’s Venture Capital practice in Silicon Valley. In his tenure in Silicon Valley’s venture community, David worked with venture-backed companies in technology, telecommunications, media, healthcare, life sciences, medical device, consumer business, and financial services. He identified, developed, evaluated, and implemented value-added solutions that enhanced companies’ operating profitability while increasing revenues and expanding market share.
Whitney has thirty-three years of professional experience in innovation, entrepreneurship, management consulting private equity, venture capital, investment management, commercial banking, and corporate finance. David earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Boston University and an Executive MBA, with high honors, from the University of San Francisco. He also received a Certificate in Biotechnology/Healthcare Entrepreneurship from the University of California-Berkeley as well as a graduate degree, with high honors, from the University of Florida’s Masters of Real Estate program.
